ISP Warns of Charity ScamsA word of warning from the Indiana State Police. When it comes to donating your hard-earned money, educate yourself about those groups that are asking for your cash. State Police Sgt. Richard Myers says the scams tend to increase in tough economic times. Myers says that if you are unfamiliar with the group, ask questions and ask for information to be sent to you via regular mail. Scammers who use the U.S. Post Office in the commission of a scam are eligible to face federal charges. This request should deter a lot of would-be scammers. If you receive a phone call or email asking for a donation on behalf of the Indiana State Police, be aware. ISP is currently working on a case where scammers claimed to be collecting money on behalf of the State Police. Sgt. Myers you can protect yourself by asking questions, as well as by asking for time to do research on the organization making the request. He says to avoid feeling bullied into giving a donation.
