A bill to delay the increases in unemployment insurance premiums for Indiana businesses has cleared its final legislative hurdle. State lawmakers reached a compromise behind closed doors to delay the premium increase in an effort to keep companies from making further job cuts. The bill, if signed by Gov. Mitch Daniels, will forestall a scheduled increase for one year, instead of the two-year postponement requested by senate republicans.

The increase was scheduled to take place in April, costing Hoosier businesses about $400 million. Some state lawmakers had argued failure to delay the tax would lead to the loss of 10,000 jobs in Indiana.
