United Way of Bartholomew County has received notification that Cincinnati Insurance Companies will pay the entire $5,010,000 limit of the building insurance policy on the Christmas Eve fire at United Way Center.  In light of this news, the United Way Board voted on Friday to proceed with the rebuilding of the 142,000 square foot building at 1531 Thirteenth Street.  The new building will be somewhat smaller as the west end of the second floor will be demolished.  This section contained about 21,000 square feet of office space and was the location of the fire.  Virtually everything in the area was totally destroyed.

The contract to rebuild has been awarded to Dunlap & Company, Inc. of Columbus.  Construction will begin as soon as cleanup and demolition are completed about March 30.  Planned completion date is December 15 which will allow agencies to be operational at United Way Center to start the new year.

All of these agencies and programs are currently operating in temporary space either at Cummins Engine Plant Building 40, the Jackson Park Realty building at 8th and Jackson Streets, or in one of the undamaged buildings in the United Way Center complex on Thirteenth Street.
