Police and Fire Youth Academy Applications Are Now Available

The Columbus Police and Fire Departments are currently accepting applications for this year's Police and Fire Youth Academy scheduled for June 25 through the 28.

Lt. Matt Myers is the public safety spokesman for the city of Columbus. He says the program gives kids ages 9 to 14 a chance to learn about what the police and fire departments do every day.

During the four day academy, students will participate in a number of hands-on activities including obstacle courses, physical fitness exercises, defensive tactics, fire safety and fire prevention. Fire trucks will also be on hand for students to inspect and learn more about. They will also have a chance to talk with members of the police department's SWAT team and police dogs will be on hand for a demonstration.

The academy is limited to 30 students and preference will be given to Bartholomew County residents who have never attended the academy before.

Myers says the event is free for the kids thanks to some very generous sponsors in our community. The deadline for applications is May 1.
