Woman Saved from Rushing Water Following Crash

Emergency responders in Jackson County saved a Kurtz woman's life early Wednesday morning after the Jeep she was driving hydroplaned into a ditch in the 200 block of State Road 258.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says dispatch received a call around 5:20 a.m. about a vehicle in a ditch that was almost covered in water.

A witness saw the vehicle, driven by Shelbie Burchett, hydroplane and go onto its side hitting a culvert. Burchett's vehicle then went into the ditch.

A few minutes later, Russell Strong, of the Hamilton Township Fire Department, and Jon Simmons, a member of the Owen Township Fire Department, arrived on scene. Another man, Robbie Ault, Simmons and an unidentified passerby tied a rope around Strong and he went into the swift moving water. Strong was able to break the rear passenger window and help Burchett get out of the vehicle.

Burchett was not injured and escaped possible death by the brave acts of Ault, Strong and Simmons.

The crash is under investigation.
