Proactive Policing Leads to Several Arrests

Some proactive policing by the North Vernon Police Department Friday night into Saturday morning led to the arrests of seven people on various charges.

Officer Justin Black, with the police department, says around 8 p.m. Friday, 19-year-old Devin D. Lovegrove, of North Vernon, was arrested and charged with possessing marijuana following a traffic stop for going 54 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone.

A K9 unit alerted to the presence of the drug during a search of the vehicle after the traffic stop, and a small amount of marijuana was found.

Then around 11 p.m. Friday, police stopped 25-year-old James M. Romero, of North Vernon, for expired license plates.

Black says when Romero spoke to police, he didn’t give them his correct name. After determining Romero’s true identity, police arrested him for failure to identify. A further investigation by police with the help of a K9 unit found that Romero possessed a hypodermic needle. Romero was also charged with driving while suspended prior along with a warrant being served on him out of Jennings County for theft.

At around 1:30 Saturday morning, police saw a vehicle ignore a stop sign at the intersection of North Elm and Bay Street. After stopping the vehicle, police requested the assistance of a K9 unit. During the course of the traffic stop, police found a small amount of marijuana along with an opened half gallon of vodka.

Arrested was 18-year-old Caitlyn Bridgewater, of Vallonia, for possessing marijuana and illegal transportation of alcohol. Three other juveniles were also arrested for possessing marijuana and illegal possession and consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Around 4:30 Saturday morning, officers received a report of someone trying to break into vehicles in the 100 block of North Fifth Street. When officers arrived to the area, they were able to find a man matching the description that was given in a short amount of time in an adjacent alley. Arrested was 33-year-old Jacob L. Miller, of North Vernon, for attempted unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
