A single engine plane crashed into a home located at 2223 Broadmoor Lane around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Columbus Public Safety spokesman Lt. Matt Myers says when first responders arrived shortly after they got the call, they noticed a lot of smoke coming from the home.

Myers says the plane's pilot and passenger were able to escape the wreckage, with one saying "Thank God I'm alive."

Around 3:30 p.m., Myers released the names of the two men that were aboard the plane at the time of crash. They are the pilot, 81-year-old Gerald H. Clayton, of Columbus, and his passenger, Dennis King. Myers says he doesn't have an age or address for King at this time.

Both men were treated and the scene. They are recovering at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.

Myers says the south side of the home sustained heavy damage. Some neighboring homes suffered some slight damage.

Myers originally said no one was at home when the crash happened, but later learned that a woman who lived there was at home and happened to be outside when the crash took place. She called 911 for help. She was not injured.

Federal Aviation Administration investigators are in charge of the investigation. They will be assisted by the Columbus Police Department, Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, and the Bartholomew County Emergency Management Agency.

Columbus Police Chief Jason Maddix stated, "We are asking residents to please avoid the area. This investigation will take a considerable amount of time. I want to thank all the emergency agencies involved for the quick response. I also want to thank Grace Lutheran Church for the use of their facility for our command post."

Any witnesses who have not been interviewed by investigators are asked to contact Columbus Police Detective Chris Couch at 376-2628.
