As the investigation into Thursday’s plane crash on Broadmoor Lane in Columbus continues, investigators have been able to talk to the passenger, 60-year-old Dennis King of Columbus, to learn more about what happened.

Columbus Public Safety spokesman Lt. Matt Myers said Saturday afternoon King’s story pretty much matched up with what they were able to learn from witnesses on the ground.

King told investigators that the single engine plane was losing power and went down very quickly. King says he and the pilot, 81-year-old Gerald H. Clayton of Columbus, were both conscious the whole time and realized they were okay.

He says they were both having trouble getting their seatbelts off and fuel was spilling all over them. Once they got their seatbelts off, King says fuel was all over him and Clayton and it ignited. They both suffered severe burns and were taken to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.

King believes the house helped to cushion the crash. He says they probably wouldn’t have made it out alive if they had crashed into the ground.

King is still listed in fair condition at Wishard. As for Clayton, family members have told Myers that he is not doing well and is in a medically induced coma at Wishard.

Myers says the plane wreckage was moved Sunday afternoon to a hanger for further investigation.
