State Police Remind You to Stay Alert in Construction Zones

Two recent construction zone crashes that ended tragically with several deaths on I-65 in northwestern Indiana has Indiana State Police reminding you once again to be careful as you travel through the zones.

Sgt. Noel Houze, with Indiana State Police in Versailles, says when you drive through a construction zone, you need to be more alert and pay attention to what is going on around you especially as you get closer to where the construction is taking place due to backups. He says you should leave plenty of space between you and the next vehicle so if you are rear-ended, you won't hit that vehicle causing more damage. You should also look for what he calls "escape routes" like the shoulder of the road, the median or a ditch, to drive into in order to avoid being hit.

Houze says when you are out driving and see signs talking about lane closures, you should go ahead and get into the lane that is open ahead of time to help prevent "the bottleneck effect."

"The bottleneck occurs when those cars that are in a hurry, they think well I need to pass two or three more cars then I will cut in and as they get closer to that construction zone of course the traffic is closer together, there's not that may openings and then all of a sudden you've got this bottleneck and that's what really slows it down," Houze said. "So go ahead and move into that lane that you know is going to be open just as soon as you get the indication that there's going to be a road closure ahead."

Houze recommends that you obey all road signage in the work zone. You should also watch out for construction workers and give them as much room as possible while traveling through the zone.

By doing all of these things, you are helping to greatly reduce serious injuries and fatalities in work zones.
