Recommendations Made at Recent FRHC School Board Meeting

This week's Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Board Meeting brought several personnel recommendations.

Larry Simpson, editor of the Hope Star Journal, says Dr. Kathy Griffey first recommended hiring Polly Trotter and Amee Taylor as Crossing Guards for the duration of August and September. Both guards will be responsible for monitoring students as they walk or ride their bikes to school. The guards will be paid $15 per hour, and this amount will come from the Safe Routes to School Grant.

Principal Lisa Smith recommended Bethany (Webster) Mize for the Kindergarten Teacher opening at Hope Elementary School.

"This year, kindergarten is very large, unexpectedly, and we are proposing a K-1 split," Griffey said. "She is working out when her first day with us will be, and we are working very hard at transitioning that class."

Smith also recommended the following four individuals:

Elementary Math Bowl Co-Coaches - Nate Nichols and Beth Newman;

Teachers-in-charge - Clarke Chafin and Dan Fleming.

Molli Walker was approved as Resource Assistant for Hope Elementary. "She worked as a sub last year, and we would like to hire her to work a maximum of 29 hours as the pa1rt time aid," Griffey said. "We really need this position."

Smith recommended the following three coaches for Hope Elementary School:

Melinda Barriger - 5th grade girls basketball;

Rob Broderick and Ryan Waltz - 6th grade girls basketball.

Principal Shawn Price has recommended Catalina Phipps for the Spanish teacher position at Hauser High school.

"She is coming from Edinburgh and I anticipate that her first day will be Monday," Griffey said.

Andy Scholl submitted his letter of resignation as Social Studies teacher at Hauser Junior & Senior High School. "He wants to the School Board for the opportunity to teach in such a wonderful community," Griffey said.

Price recommended Stephanie Tom as the new Social Studies teacher, and she will replace Andy Scholl.

Rebekah Bryan submitted her letter of resignation as the Yearbook Co-Sponsor at Hauser Junior & Senior High School.

Jim Tedder, Transportation/Maintenance Director, recommended Roger Records as a substitute bus driver.

Lisa Garrison, FRHC Food Service Director, presented the School Board members with a Summary for the Summer Lunch Program. "We served a total of 435 breakfasts and 1379 lunches at the Community Center of Hope," she said. "We served 2238 lunch meals at Hope Elementary."

The numbers were lower this year at the Community Center, but higher at Hope Elementary School. "Thanks to Dr. Griffey and the Board Members for allowing this very needed program to exist for our community," Garrison said.

"Thanks for doing this," Steven Wilson said. "I'm sure there are a lot of stomachs that thank you too."

"Some of the new students also got to know Mrs. Garrison and got to learn their way around the school before the school year actually started," Smith added.

Parent Teacher Conference dates have been decided. Lisa Smith recommended Oct. 24, 2013 and Feb. 13, 2014 for Hope Elementary School.

Shawn Price recommends Parent Teacher Conferences on Sept. 12, 2013 and Feb. 13, 2014.
