Two Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide in Edinburgh

Autopsies of the two people who died in an apparent murder-suicide Monday night in Edinburgh are set for later today.

Edinburgh Police Chief David Mann says shortly before 7 p.m., police received telephone reports of gun shots being fired in the area of Franklin and Center Cross Streets.  When officers arrived at the scene, they found that 30-year-old Kevin Stitt and 30-year-old Amber Stitt, both of Edinburgh, had been shot.

Amber Stitt was taken by ambulance to Methodist hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. The Marion County coroner later told police that she had died from her injuries. Johnson County Coroner Craig Lutz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told police that Kevin Stitt, who approached the intersection on a motor scooter, stopped at the intersection, approached Amber Stitt who was on foot walking by and fired one or more shots from a .38 caliber handgun at Amber at a close range.  Kevin Stitt then reportedly turned the gun on himself and fired one or more shots at himself consequently taking his own life at the scene.

Chief Mann says the couple had an extensive domestic violence past which included a prior incident where Kevin Stitt had gone to his wife's work in January 2007 and fired a shotgun into the air resulting in his arrest for criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon for which he later plead guilty.

Kevin Stitt was recently arrested by Edinburgh Police for disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement after reports that he was near the home that Amber was living at watching the home. Kevin Stitt later bonded out on these charges.

Units from the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office, Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Indiana State Police, Indiana Excise Police, Edinburgh Fire and Rescue and off duty Edinburgh officers responded to the scene.

Mann says the investigation continues.
