Indiana State Police along with the Seymour Police Department were instrumental in saving an injured Seymour man from his burning car early Saturday morning.

Sgt. Noel Houze, with Indiana State Police in Versailles, says around 2:30 a.m., a SUV driven by 30-year-old Christopher T. Nichols was going south on S. O'Brien Street south of New Farmington Road when for unknown reasons his vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway striking a bridge abutment. It then overturned onto its side where it burst into flames becoming fully engulfed.

When Troopers Chris Lockman and Jared Black arrived on the scene, along with Seymour Officers Bart Bevers and Crystal Schapson, they saw Nichols lying less than a foot from the vehicle and his clothing was also burning.

Trooper Lockman grabbed Nichols and was attempting to pull him away from the vehicle, but was having trouble moving him. Tpr. Black grabbed Lockman's gun belt and began to pull Lockman as Lockman continued to pull the victim while the two Seymour officers attempted to protect the troopers and Nichols as they to fought back the flames with fire extinguishers. They managed to get Nichols a safe distance from the vehicle before EMS officials arrived on the scene. Tpr. Lockman suffered very minor burns during the rescue.

Nichols was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour by Jackson County EMS and later airlifted to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis for severe burns suffered in the crash.

The crash, which is still under investigation, is being investigated by Tpr. Lockman. He was assisted at the scene by Troopers Jared Black and Seth Davidson. Also assisting was Seymour Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Seymour and Jackson-Washington Twp. Fire Departments and Jackson County EMS.
