The Indiana Department of Transportation has scheduled routine biannual inspections at two area bridges. Both require traffic restrictions to allow contracted inspectors safe access to areas above and below the bridge decks.
Beginning Monday, a team of inspectors will examine the Interstate 65 bridge over State Road 46 west of Columbus. Traffic will be restricted at ramps converging at State Road 46 while crews inspect the underside of the I-65 structure. Closures will be between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. These restrictions will exist daily through Sunday, Sept. 15.
· Southbound I-65 exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 46 will be CLOSED.
· The southbound exit ramp to westbound S.R. 46 will remain OPEN.
. Northbound I-65 exit ramp to westbound S.R. 46 will be CLOSED.
· The northbound exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 46 will remain OPEN.
All ramps will be open through the nighttime hours.
INDOT suggests that northbound traffic may choose to detour around the bridge site via State Road 11. Motorists traveling south may wish to take U.S. 31 into Columbus, returning to I-65 via State Road 46.
On Monday, Sept. 16, inspectors will examine the top side of the bridge. This will require individual lane closures. These inspections will take place through Sunday, Sept. 22, excluding Friday, Sept. 20, due to expected high traffic volume. Restrictions will be in place from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. One lane will be restricted at a time and no ramps will be closed.
INDOT says once I-65 bridge inspections have been completed, the inspection team will focus on the newly named Robert N. Stewart Bridge spanning the East Fork of White River entering downtown Columbus. Between Monday, Sept. 23 and Friday, Oct. 4, crews will examine the top side of the Second Street bridge. This will require closing two lanes of State Road 46 at a time, leaving two lanes open to traffic.
· Phase I inspections will route through lanes to the north side of the bridge.
· Phase II inspections will route through lanes to one lane on the north side and one lane on the south side of the bridge.
· Phase III inspections will route through lanes to the south side of the bridge.
There will be no weekend inspections or closures.
Inspections below the Second Street bridge deck will begin Monday, Oct. 7. INDOT says that there will be no lane restrictions during this portion of the inspection.
