A Jennings County teen died over the weekend after she jumped from a moving van north of Seymour.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says 16-year-old Laikyn Field, of North Vernon, died Saturday at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Officials say Field leaped from a minivan traveling 30 mph in the 6000 block of Enos Road.

They say the girl's stepfather, Jason Bowerly - who was driving - and her mother, Kandle Bowerly, also of Jennings County, were driving east on County Road 700 N when the girl became upset and leaped from the rear passenger's side of the van.

She was taken to Schneck Medical ER, and then airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital due to severe head injuries. The girl's father, Kevin Field, was later told about what had happened.

Jennings County Schools Superintendent Dr. Terry Sargent released a statement this morning saying the school district's thoughts and prayers are with Laikyn's family and friends at this terrible time. Laikyn was a sophomore at Jennings County High School. Sargent says her passing will also be deeply felt by students and faculty at the school.

The school district is on Fall Break this week.
