Columbus Police and Bartholomew County Sheriff's deputies were called out around 1 p.m. Monday to the area of Carter Crossing and Lowell Road after getting a report about a man allegedly pointing an assault rifle at vehicles traveling on Lowell Road.

Columbus Public Safety spokesman Lt. Matt Myers says when police arrived in the area, they found an 18-year-old man in the back yard of 1994 St. James Place matching the description and holding what appeared to be an assault type rifle.

Police ordered the man to drop the rifle, which was later determined to be a pellet style toy. The man complied with officers orders and was not injured.

Myers says as the investigation continued, the man told officers that he and another 18-year-old friend were shooting at targets in the back yard of a home that faces Lowell Road prior to officers arrival. Both adults told police they did not think about perceptions of people seeing this. Both adults were counseled by officers on the dangers their actions could impose on themselves and other residents. A total of eight officers and deputies responded to this call.
