Suspect in Shoplifting Case Leads Police on Chase

A Columbus man is lodged in the Bartholomew County Jail after leading police on a chase throughout east Columbus shortly before 11 Saturday night.

Columbus Public Safety spokesman Lt. Matt Myers says police had been called out to the east side Walmart prior to the pursuit because 37-year-old Marlon Cowan Jr. was allegedly a suspect in a shoplifting incident at the store.

When officers arrived, they found Cowan in the parking lot sitting in a vehicle. As officers tried to make contact with him to investigate the shoplifting complaint, he fled in the vehicle. Police were able to capture him a short time later.

Cowan was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of theft, resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, resisting law enforcement of foot, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, driving while suspended and two warrants out of Bartholomew County.
