Police in Columbus want to remind you to make sure that if you have valuable items in your garage, to lock it up.

Columbus Public Safety spokesman Lt. Matt Myers says the city has seen an increase over the past two months where thefts have been reported from detached garages and sheds mostly in the downtown area. Some are left unlocked or the locks have been cut. Myers says most of the items taken are power tools, lawn mowers and weed eaters.

Police also want to remind homeowners to keep detailed records of their property. Photos of property with brand, make model and serial numbers are very useful for police when trying to located stolen property. Police also want to remind you to call police anytime you suspect suspicious activity is occurring in your neighborhood.

Last week, a home owner in the 1600 block of Franklin Street walked into his detached garage during an attempted theft. The home owner said the suspect he encountered was a white man standing 5' 7" tall and had a scruffy face. He had dark hair and was wearing a dark blue windbreaker jacket with blue jeans. The suspect also had a tattoo written in script style across his chest. The suspect fled the area before police arrived.

Police are not sure if this man is responsible for all the thefts, but do think some of the thefts could be related.

Myers says the investigation continues. Police have stepped up patrols and are working with local pawn shops in hopes of getting leads.

Anyone with information regarding these thefts or any other should call Columbus Police at 376-2600.
