'Shop with a Cop' Draws Near

As Christmas draws near, the best of area residents and organizations shine through.

Columbus Police Chief Jason Maddix says one of those events that he looks forward to every year is "Shop with a Cop." This year's event is taking place on Sunday, Dec. 22 at the west side Columbus Walmart. Maddix says this event kicks off at 1 p.m. and lasts for about four hours. During that time, needy kids are paired with officers, who Maddix says spend between $150 and $200 on each child. Most of the money goes to clothes, coats, toiletries and other items.

The funds for "Shop with a Cop" are generated by local law enforcement in various ways. Maddix says the outreach effort was originally put together by the local Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge. He adds that Lodge President, Allen Trisler, is on a campaign called "40k in 40 Days," to raise additional funds for the "Shop with a Cop" effort. Other funds come from donations provided by individuals and businesses. Maddix adds that a large amount of the funding for this program comes from the money raised from parking during the Barthololmew County 4-H Fair. He says that the FOP runs the parking and that every dollar goes to this effort.

Maddix says kids can get registered for this event by having their parents call 2-1-1. Once the child is registered, parents are given instructions on dropping the child off for the event.
