Ninevah Fire Claims Two Lives

Authorities in Johnson County continue to investigate an apartment fire that claimed the lives of two people around 5 p.m. Friday in Ninevah.

Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said Saturday morning that the bodies have not been identified, but were recovered from the front south end of the upstairs apartment. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

Cox says the first body was recovered by firefighters sifting through the rubble. The second body was recovered by a cadaver dog called to the scene.

The sheriff says the cause of the fire is not known at this time. Nothing he says at this point looks criminal. There is no new information on the mother’s condition at this time.

According to the sheriff’s report, the mother and her 5-year-old daughter escaped the blaze, but an 18-month-old girl and a 6-month-old boy weren’t accounted for.

Sheriff’s deputies along with members of the Ninevah and Princes Lakes police departments attempted to go into the home to save the children, but they were unsuccessful.

Ninevah fire and medics arrived to treat the mother, who was badly burned in the fire. She was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital, and then flown to Wishard Hospital. Her daughter was not hurt.

Firefighters fought the blaze from outside because the home was fully engulfed.

The sheriff’s office obtained a search warrant for the home so investigators could enter it after firefighters finished putting the fire out. It was delivered around 11 p.m.

The sheriff says the father was at work when the fire happened.

Ninevah Fire was assisted by several Johnson County fire departments. The Johnson County Coroner was also on the scene.
