Two elderly Johnson County residents were the targets of phone and text scams recently.

Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says in one case, the would-be victim did the right thing to avoid being taken advantage of. The second one was not so lucky.

According to sheriff's department reports, the would-be victim received a text message from someone who claimed to be with his bank. The message stated that there was a problem with the man's debit card and that he should call a specific phone number to have the issue resolved.

When he called the number, 1-760-843-0016, the person on the other end tried to get personal information. The would-be victim hung up and called his bank, stopping the scam in its tracks.

Later that same day, investigators were contacted by a 69-year-old Bargersville woman who figured out that she was being scammed after sending two money transfers totaling over $400 to an address in India.

In this case, the victim received a phone call from a man with a heavy Middle Eastern accent who claimed to work for Microsoft. The man, who identified himself as Alex Martin, told her that her computer was vulnerable and a repair was needed.

As "Alex Martin" continued to call and ask for more personal information, the victim became suspicious. That is when she contacted police.

Sheriff Cox again warns residents to never give out personal information to strangers, especially during unsolicited phone calls, text messages or letters. If you suspect you are being scammed, call your bank and/or the business the scammer claims to represent. It is also a good idea for adult children of older folks to talk to their parents about this growing criminal and financial threat.
