United Way Seeking Volunteers for Income Tax Program

The Jackson County United Way needs volunteers to help with its fifth Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, season late next month. Volunteers will serve individuals and families with a household income of $52,000 or less for next year.

Officials say since the VITA program began in Jackson County in 2010, 569 tax returns have been completed by over 40 VITA volunteers in Jackson County. This volunteer service has brought in $781,612 in Federal returns and $106,244 in State returns by those individuals who used the VITA program during that time.

“The program needs 30 volunteers who will serve as tax preparers, greeters, and site coordinators,” Bonita Dobbs, JCUW Program Manager, said.  “The volunteers should be available for at least four hours a week during the VITA tax season from Jan. 20 to April 11, 2014.”

The Jackson County United Way is presently seeking volunteers to assist with the tax preparations and no tax preparation experience is necessary.  It will provide support and a free training will be offered to all preparers by an IRS representative.  Training will be offered on Monday, Jan. 6 and Tuesday, Jan. 7. The times have not been set. All volunteer tax preparers must pass an IRS certification examination in order to assist taxpayers.

Officials are currently securing locations for tax preparations which currently include the Jackson County Public Library and Medora High School; other locations throughout Jackson County are being sought.  “Possible locations must have computers, printers, and reliable access to the Internet,” Dobbs said. “Interested parties should contact Jackson County United Way to talk about the details.”  The sites' locations and tax preparation hours will be made public closer to the start of tax season and registration will once again be provided through United Way 2-1-1.

A new service will be offered during this tax season, individuals will have the option to do their own taxes with the assistance of a trained preparer.  The online option for taxes is free and can provide preparers with federal and state filing electronically for no charge.  Jackson County United Way is excited and believes this will allow more individuals to be served during the tax season.
