Police Raid Gas Station for Allegedly Selling Synthetic Drug

Four people were charged Wednesday for allegedly dealing a synthetic drug from the Phillips 66 convenience mart located at 400 E. Jefferson St. in Franklin.

Johnson County Prosecutor Bradley Cooper charged Nachhattar Singh with three counts of dealing a synthetic drug, Harinder Kaur with four counts of dealing a synthetic drug, Rupinder Singh with two counts of dealing a synthetic drug and Veerpartap Singh with three counts of dealing a synthetic drug. The charge is a Class C felony and carries a penalty of up to eight years in prison and a $10, 000 fine.

Franklin Police say their investigation began two years ago on Jan. 19, 2012 after police received complaints from the public that "Spice" was being sold out of the business.

Between Jan. 19, 2012 and Thursday, police conducted an investigation into the sale of synthetic drugs and synthetic lookalike drugs at the business.

Over the course of the investigation, police say undercover officers and confidential informants purchased synthetic drugs and lookalike synthetic drugs nearly 30 times from the business. All of the purchases were made from the owners and members of their family.

At the onset of the case, the suspected drugs were sent for analysis. The results indicated that chemicals found would be controlled/illegal by the next legislative codification or emergency rule of the Indiana Board of Pharmacy. The growing problem of manufacturer's altering the chemical structure of synthetic drugs made prosecution of the offenders extremely difficult if not impossible.

Police were able to carry out this raid thanks to a state law meant to help police fight this problem. The business is now closed.
