New CFD Spokesman Urges Winter Safety

The Columbus Fire Department has a new Public Information Officer. Captain Mike Wilson was named to the post just a few weeks ago.

Wilson explains his responsibilities include reporting on the projects that the department is working on, as well as providing information on structure fires and traffic crashes. Wilson adds that he wants to focus on fire prevention methods for Columbus residents this year.

Wilson says it is his goal to educate Columbus residents on how to best protective themselves against a house fire. He says there are a number of tools available to homeowners, such as smoke detectors and resources on how to make a fire escape plan for all members of your household.

Wilson also talked about staying safe as another blast of cold weather hit our area Wednesday. He urges you to wear good, rubber-soled shoes. Wilson also encourages you to keep looking where you are walking to avoid slick, hazardous areas. One way to avoid slick spots is to know where they are and what they look like. Wilson says you should look for "shiny, polished" areas and try to avoid them.
