A spare tire caused a crash on I-65 in Jackson County Wednesday night.

Sgt. Noel Houze with the Indiana State Police Public Post in Versailles says the accident occurred after a spare tire fell from a truck and was struck by another vehicle.

Houze says that at approximately 6:15 p.m., a car driven by 69-year-old Kathleen Peterson, of Columbus, was northbound on I-65 near the 46 mile marker when she struck the spare tire in the roadway. The collision caused Peterson's vehicle to flip over onto its top. It then skidded down the interstate approximately 300 feet before coming to rest in the left lane. Peterson had to be cut from the vehicle by firefighters. She was then transported to Schneck Medical Center for cuts and bruises.

According to witness statements, a black 4 X 4 pickup truck apparently lost its spare tire from below the bed. The truck continued northbound without stopping. Investigators believe the driver of the truck likely did not realize he had lost the tire.

Investigators are asking that anyone who may have information to please contact Trooper Matt Holley at the Indiana State Police Versailles Post at 812-689-5000.
