Sen. Coats Congratulates Columbus Teen on West Point Acceptance

Senator Dan Coats has congratulated a Columbus teen on his acceptance into the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Coats nominated Daniel Kotnick for an appointment to West Point. "There is no greater honor for an American citizen than wearing the uniform in service to the United States," said Coats. "I congratulate Daniel on this distinguished honor and believe his talents and abilities will make him an outstanding cadet. I look forward to hearing of his continued success."

Kotnick is an Eagle Scout and involved in competitive policy debate and public speaking. A high school senior, Kotnick has taken courses at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus and Liberty University.

Individuals interested in attending a U.S. service academy may apply for and receive nominations from both their U.S. Representative and their two U.S. Senators. Applicants may also apply to the Vice President of the United States, who can nominate applicants at large.

To assist in selecting the most qualified candidates, Coats formed an academy selection committee to review each application packet he received and to select the top applicants for interviews. These interviews were conducted in early December, and Coats nominated final candidates earlier this year.
