Sneezing Driver Leads to Car in Frozen Pond

Columbus firefighters work to free a car from a frozen retention pond on Indianapolis Road Thursday afternoon.

Columbus firefighters pulled a car from a pond near Kenholt Drive and Indianapolis Road Thursday afternoon after a sneezing driver lost control of his vehicle.

Capt. Mike Wilson, spokesman for the fire department, said the call came in at about 4:30 p.m. as a water rescue, but by the time firefighters arrived on the scene it had been downgraded to only a vehicle in the water.

The vehicle's driver said he started sneezing and as he reached over to grab a tissue, the car went into the grass and then slid onto a retention pond, Wilson said. The ice on the pond, which appeared to be about six inches thick held the vehicle at first but as the driver tried to maneuver off of the pond the car got stuck. Further efforts to pull the car off the pond caused the ice to break.

When firefighters arrived they found the vehicle almost completely submerged, Wilson said. Firefighters Bryan Bailey and Allen James, outfitted with protective cold-water suits, used axes and a chainsaw to clear the ice from the vehicle so it could be pulled out.

No one was injured in the incident.
