Search for Submerged Vehicle Comes up Empty

Bartholomew County authorities say a search for a submerged vehicle came up empty.

Maj. Todd Noblitt, with the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department, says dispatchers received a call at 9:18 Friday morning that a red truck or pickup was seen floating in the river near County Roads 900 North and 300 East. He noted that the road is closed in that area because the Flatrock River is out of its banks.

Noblitt says the water rescue team, including divers, was dispatched shortly after the call came in. The team was on sight and launched watercraft within 35 minutes, but they were unable to locate any vehicle.

Deputies then requested assistance from Special Deputy Jim Ogilvie to begin a search from the air. Noblitt says Ogilvie was airborne at 10:50 a.m. After a thorough search, he was also unable to locate any vehicle in the river. The search was called off a short time later.

Noblitt says this is a good reminder to never try to cross roads covered with any amount of rushing water. He notes that it only takes a few inches of water to sweep away a vehicle.

We'll update this story as more information becomes available.
