State Rep. Milo Smith, of Columbus, led the Indiana House of Representatives on Monday in recognizing the work and dedication of Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers from across the state. The volunteers were invited to the gallery of the House and received a standing ovation from the members on the floor.

Rick Scalf, with the Columbus office of Advocates for Children, says the recognition came following the third annual "CASA Day at the Statehouse." He says the day is aimed at raising awareness among lawmakers of the work done by CASA volunteers on behalf of victims of child abuse and neglect.

Among the speakers at the event was Indiana Supreme Court Justice Loretta H. Rush, who spent 14 years as a juvenile judge prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court. She commended CASA volunteers for taking on the extra work of being a voice for vulnerable children. "I've never seen a CASA volunteer who didn't already have a full plate, and take these children on top," said Rush. "Thank you for your commitment."

Advocates for Children is a non-profit organization which provides CASA volunteers for children in Bartholomew, Decatur and Jennings counties. Scalf encourages those interested in learning more about the agency, or what it takes to become an advocate for a child in need, to visit their website, http://www.apowerfulvoice.org/.
