United Way Presents Annual Awards

Friends and supporters of United Way of Bartholomew County celebrated a year of record-breaking generosity at the charity's annual meeting Thursday night.

Mark Stewart, the head of the United Way, reported that the 2013 campaign topped its $4 million dollar goal by more than $79,000.

Stewart told the crowd that there is no one "silver bullet" that can solve the community's problems. But he said agencies can use a "silver buckshot" approach to work together to deal with the educational, financial stability and health issues that are challenging one in three Bartholomew County families.

The United Way also recognized the winners of its annual awards Thursday, during the agency's annual report to the community.

The students at CSA Lincoln Campus won the "Give Award" along with Centra Credit Union. The CSA students donated $1,500 to United Way last year after setting a $1,000 goal. Centra Credit Union had a 47 percent increase in giving last year.

Advocate Awards were presented to Dunlap Incorporated and to Dave and Jo McKinney.

Sheryl Adams, the executive director of Sans Souci, received the United Way's Agency Leadership Award. The 2013 Volunteer Award went to Sara Jacobi.

Longtime United Way volunteers Bob and Mary Orben picked up the Live United Award. Bob Orben said that Columbus is a "powerful Community where people come together to make things happen.
