Reliable Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning

Severe Weather Preparedness Week

It is Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana.

Bartholomew County Emergency Management Director Dennis Moats says that while severe weather can strike at any time, volatile weather typically accompanies the change in seasons from winter to spring. He adds that is the time of year that Indiana experiences some of the worst weather-related issues.

As part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, Moats says the Emergency Alert System will sound twice that day across Indiana radios, televisions and all-hazard radios. The first alert will sound in the morning. The second, in the early evening. Moats says this is a good time for families, businesses and schools to practice drills for how they would deal with severe weather.

Moats says all residents are encouraged to have a disaster preparedness kit. Items to include in your kit include:

Three days worth of food and water

Battery operated all-hazard radio

Extra batteries

First aid kit

Extra clothing, including good shoes, rain gear, blankets and personal hygiene items

List of emergency phone numbers

Important document, such as personal identification, Social Security cards, insurance and banking information

Special items as needed, such as medication, insulin and baby needs.

Moats also says this a good time of year to consider your insurance needs. He says that flood insurance can bring peace of mind for a relatively low price. You can learn more about the nation's flood insurance program at www.floodsmart.gov.
