Troopers Investigate Inmate's Death

Indiana State Police are investigating the death of an inmate Monday night at the Decatur County Jail.

The Greensburg Daily News reported Wednesday that M. Shane Satterfield, 38, was serving a two week sentence for a drunk driving conviction and had been in the jail since Thursday. County officials told the Daily News that Satterfield was incoherent Monday night and sheriff's department personnel called medics. While emergency responders were treating Satterfield he was semi-conscious and then stopped breathing.

The inmate was taken to Decatur County Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m.

Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Noel Houze told the Greensburg paper that results of an autopsy are pending, but Satterfield's cause of death appears to be natural causes. Houze said there was no indication of foul play or that Satterfield committed suicide.
