'Red Cross Month' Continues

March is an important month for the American Red Cross. Mike Johnston is on Columbus' Red Cross Board of Directors and serves as Chairman of the "Heroes Campaign." He says March is "Red Cross Month."

Johnston says the purpose of the month is to celebrate and "recognize the everyday heroes who reach out to help their neighbors in need." He adds that this month is also a good time for everyone to discover their own inner hero and to make a difference in the lives of people in need. Johnston says that can be done by taking a CPR class, donating blood or donating time or money to those in need.

Johnston says one group that can find disaster particularly difficult to deal with is children. Recognizing that, he says the Red Cross has a program aimed at helping to comfort those children who have experienced disaster. When a disaster strikes, Red Cross volunteers are on the scene and hand out a stuffed animal, called "Piper the Puppy," to children at the scene. Johnston says that for $100, you, or your organization, can insure that one of these puppies gets in the hands of a child in need. For your donation, he says your name, or that of your group, will be emblazoned on the puppy's paw.
