Store chase leads to arrest

Store chase leads to arrest
Michael S. Gilbert, 44, of Columbus

An argument in a store parking lot led to an arrest of a Columbus man on charges of attempted theft and attempting to flee from the Columbus police.

Lt. Matt Myers, spokesman for the department, says that Officer Troy Love was called to a store parking lot on State Street Tuesday because of an argument over a car door almost hitting another vehicle. But one of those arguing had already gone into the store.

That person, 44-year-old Michael S. Gilbert of Columbus, took off running through the store when Love approached him, Myers said. Gilbert also started starting throwing away items of merchandise which he had concealed under his clothing. After being threatened with a Taser Gilbert finally surrendered and was taken into custody.

Gilbert was transported to Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of attempted theft, a Class D felony and resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor.
