Search continues for missing kayaker

The search is continuing this morning for a Michigan man, missing since a kayaking mishap on Flat Rock River yesterday morning.

Enrique Quinonez, 27, of Kalamazoo, Mich. was swept away Sunday morning after his kayak capsized on the river, near Mill Race Park. Crews called off the search at about 8 p.m. yesterday because of the loss of the daylight.

Major Todd Noblitt, spokesman for Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department, said that crews from the Bartholomew COunty Swift Water Rescue Team were headed out just before 8 a.m. this morning. Noblitt said that the incoming rain would further complicate the search as water levels rise again.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reports that Quinonez went kayaking at about 11:20 a.m. Sunday with a Columbus friend, 27-year-old Alex Cruz. They put their kayaks into the water near the Eighth Street bridge close to Indianapolis Road and Mill Race Center.

According to DNR, Quinonez's kayak capsized and he went into the water. Quinonez does not know how to swim, and was not wearing a life vest, his friend told investigators. Cruz dragged Quinonez to a tree but Quinonez lost his grip and disappeared under the water.
