Six injured in Jackson County crash

A six vehicle crash Monday evening in Jackson County left six people injured and a family pet dead.

James P. Joyner, 47, of Greensboro, N.C. was southbound on Interstate 65 at about 6:20 p.m. near the 48.5 mile marker when he failed to notice that traffic was slowed down due to construction work, according to Indiana State Police reports.

Joyner's pickup truck and trailer struck the rear of a car driven by Alissa B. Kanwit, 41, of Findlay, Ohio. It then went on to strike an SUV, a car, a truck and an SUV with a trailer.

Joyner suffered a possible broken neck, state police said and Kanwit received heavy bruising and cuts to her face. Other injuries included:

  • Donnie C. Revell -- possible broken bones

  • Ronald Howe -- severe bruising and lacerations

  • Olivia Howe -- severe bruising and lacerations

  • Karen M. Howe -- severe bruising and lacerations.

The Howe family's dog was killed in the crash.

Joyner was charged with driving at a speed too fast to avoid a collision. Both lanes of I-65 southbound were closed until about 7:40 p.m. when one lane was opened. Both lanes were re-opened at approximately 8:20.

State Police Trooper Matt Holley was assisted at the scene by other troopers, Seymour Police Department, Jackson County EMS, and Seymour Fire Department. The crash remains under investigation.
