Wear denim with a purpose

Wednesday is a special day in recognition of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Kelly Benjamin, Chairperson of the Domestic Violence Action Team, is encouraging you to "wear denim with a purpose" this Wednesday to help raise awareness of sexual assaults.

Benjamin says this campaign was triggered by an Italian Supreme Court ruling in the early 90s where the rape conviction a man who assaulted an 18-year-old woman was overturned because the victim was wearing what they considered to be tight jeans. The justices ruled that the victim must have helped to remove the jeans, implying consent. Following that decision, women it the Italian parliament wore denim jeans in solidarity with the rape victim.

Benjamin says many employers are relaxing dress rules on Wednesday to allow the wearing of jeans, or another article of denim. If you are able to do so, you are being encouraged to help raise awareness about this important issue.
