Power-line utility trucks damaged in fire

Three power-line utility trucks were damaged in a fire last night at Bartholomew County REMC.

According to Capt. Mike Wilson, spokesman for the Columbus Fire Department, a call came in at about 6:45 p.m. that the cab of a utility truck was fully engulfed in flames at the REMC building on Deaver Road.

Four trucks, owned and operated by Pike Corp. of Mount Airy, N.C., were parked about 100 feet from the REMC building. Crews from the company were doing contract work for REMC and had left the vehicles about 15 minutes before the fire was noticed.

Wilson said firefighters had to cut a padlock to get into the REMC parking lot but then it only took a few moments to extinguish the fire. Three of the four trucks were damaged in the blaze and damages are estimated at $100,000, Wilson said.
