Wings Over Muscatatuck

The 16th Annual Wings Over Muscatatuck Migratory Bird Festival will be held Friday and Saturday at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, in Seymour. Activities for Sunday will be held at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge, near Madison.

The Wings Over Muscatatuck Bird Festival celebrates birds and the natural environment.

Events throughout the festival include workshops, bird walks, bird banding, kid's activities and informative discussions about wildlife in Indiana.

Live birds of prey will be on display and seven tours to the Muscatatuck closed area will be offered.

The schedule is as follows:

Friday, May 9

    8 a.m. to Noon - Guided Birding Trip on Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. - Advance registration                 required and space is limited.   
    1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. - Big Tree Walk (Birds provided).
    7 p.m. - Whooping Crane         Reintroduction Program by Dan Kaiser.

Saturday, May 10

    6 a.m. to 8 a.m. - Breakfast with the Birds. - Continental breakfast outside Visitor Center.
    6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.  - Guided Tour of Muscatatuck Closed Area - (With pre-registration or day of event when available). - Travel by van with a Refuge guide to the closed area and other interesting birding spots. Bring binoculars.
    8 a.m. to 10 a.m. - Morning Bird Walk. - Birders of all abilities are invited to join David Crouch for an easy bird identification walk.
    Beginning at 8:30 a.m. - Bird Banding. - Dr. Ron Weiss of Chipper Woods Bird Observatory.
    8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. - Birdhouse Building for Kids.
    8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. - Guided Tour of Muscatatuck Closed Area - (With pre-registration or day of event when available). - Travel by van with a Refuge guide to the closed area and other interesting birding spots. Bring binoculars.
    9 a.m. to Noon - Children's Birding Activities by Greater Seymour Chamber of Commerce Environmental and Recycling Committee.
    9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. - Hawks and Eagles of Indiana with Indiana DNR staff. - Meet live hawks and eagles who reside at Hardy Lake Chamberlain Rehabilitation Center.
    10:30 a.m. to Noon - Guided Tour of Muscatatuck Closed Area - (With pre-registration or day of event when available). -Travel by van with a Refuge guide to the closed area. Bring binoculars.
    11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. - Bird calling contest. - Bring your best, all-natural bird call (no aids) to vie for prizes and recognition. Theatrics are encouraged!
    11 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Lunch provided by Mercy Rescue and Adoption.
    11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. - Bird Stories. - Hear local storyteller Sharon Kirk Clifton bring bird stories to life.
    Noon to 3 p.m. - Junior Birder Activities. - Hands-on, interactive activities for youngsters involve learning about birds.
    12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Junior Duck Stamp Awards Ceremony. - Muscatatuck hosts and manages the Indiana Junior Duck Stamp conservation art contest for students in grades K-12. State winners will receive their awards.
    12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Owls of Indiana. - Learn about these nocturnal hunters with Indiana DNR staff.
    2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. - Animal Tracking Walk. - See and learn about animal tracks and make plaster casts of tracks.     2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. - Nature Discovery Area Dedication -       Muscatatuck's newest addition will be unveiled during a ribbon cutting ceremony.
    2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. - Guided Tour of Muscatatuck Closed Area - (With pre-registration or day of event when available). 
    3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. - Bird Tree Walk (Birds Provided).
    4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. - Guided Tour of Muscatatuck Closed Area - (With pre-registration or day of event when available).

Sunday, May 11

    8 a.m. to Noon - Guided Tour of Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge Closed Area. Pre-registration required. Big Oaks, a 50,000 acre refuge, is home to uncommon birds and plants. Call 812-522-4352 extension 12 to register. Trip will leave from Big Oaks office.
