Renovation projects at Columbus parks near finish

Major renovation projects on two Columbus parks facilities are nearing their end.

Roof repairs on Hamilton Center Ice Arena and Donner Center are both expected to be finished in the next few weeks, depending on the weather.

Jamie Brinegar, business services director for the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department said the roof work at Hamilton was paid for with funds from a bond originally intended for an outdoor sports complex. But the interior work is all being done through donations.

"Inside the building is private fundraising of $1.3 million worth of improvements to the facility," Brinegar said.

Brinegar said the inside work includes new flooring, new boards and glass on the ice rink and restroom and locker room improvements. He said the majority of the work will be done in the next couple of weeks, but some will take up to a month to complete.

A grand reopening celebration for the ice rink will likely be set for October, Brinegar said.

Brinegar said the last of the Donner work will depend on good weather.

"(In) the concrete seating area, for that work we are waiting for four days of no rain," Brinegar said.

He said the Donner work has been done in three phases -- the locker rooms, the entry area and the offices.

The work is making a huge difference in the facilities, he said.

"Donner  and Hamilton Center were both places where we had buckets to collect water when it rained heavily," Brinegar said.  "Now, in both places there are no buckets."
