City condemns seven properties

The city of Columbus is going after unsafe buildings across the city.

During Tuesday's Board of Public Works and Safety meeting, the body approved plans to order the demolition of seven properties. City Attorney Jeff Logston says the city first utilized the state's unsafe Building law last year when they ordered the demolition of the Best Buy Carpet building near 25th Street and Central Avenue.

Logston says that most of the properties being targeted now are on the east side of Columbus. He stresses that the demolition orders have nothing to do with aesthetics and everything to do with public safety. Logston says that the owners of the properties have ten working days to have the buildings torn down. If they fail to do so, the city will do it and place a lien on the property to recoup their costs.

The owners of two other properties were given an opportunity to improve their buildings. Logston says they must show a discernible, good-faith effort to improve the structures by mid-July.
