CFD Open House set for Saturday

The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) is inviting you to attend a Community Day event at Fire Station 1 this Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. CFD Capt. Mike Wilson says this will be the fourth open house event to be held at each of the city's six fire stations. Station 1 is located at 1101 Jackson Street.

Wilson says the original station was built in 1941. In 1990, the station was updated with a design by Architect Group. Inc. of Columbus, to include the expansion of the original station as well as the addition of the fire department headquarters and administrative offices. In addition to the Engine 1, Truck 1 , Battalion 1 and Columbus Regional Health EMS 1 , Wilson says Station 1 houses the 1937 Stutz. This Cummins diesel powered fire engine was purchased by the department in 1939 for $9,000. The Stutz is said to be the first diesel powered fire engine in the world. Station 1 contains various photos of historic fires that occurred throughout our departments history. A staff wall displays the photographs of all current firefighters serving the department.

Station 1 protects the downtown Columbus neighborhoods as well as the Indianapolis Road industrial park.

Wilson says that you and your family is invited to visit the station, view the equipment and talk with your firefighters. Mayor Kristen Brown is scheduled to be in attendance to assist with tours and talk about public safety. The tours will be family friendly with opportunities for children and adults to climb inside the cab of a fire engine, ladder truck or paramedic ambulance.
