Scam targets older residents

Deputies are warning again about an ongoing scam targeting elderly residents.

In the scam, a victim is called by a person who claims to be their grandchild and says the younger relative has been jailed during a trip out of state or out of the country. The fake relative says they need the victim to send bond money.

In the most recent case, a Johnson County woman was told her grandson was arrested on marijuana charges in California. A second scam artist got on the phone and claimed to be with a sheriff's department. The elderly victim was going to send the money, but family members contacted the grandson who was at work in Indiana and convinced the woman not to send the money.

Deputies said that the phone number, 514-224-3849, was also used in a similar fraud incident.
