Redevelopment Commission hears parking proposal

The Columbus Redevelopment Commission heard a proposal to deal with the parking problems affecting the downtown area.

A plan presented Monday night by the Parking Implementation Committee would raise parking fines to $50 each. The Parking Committee, represented by City Council members Dascal Bunch and Kenny Whipker, presented a proposal that would see fines for parking infractions increased substantially. Those fines would then need to be paid within 72 hours.  "It's about changing behavior, not generating revenue," said Bunch, who says too many downtown employees are skirting the law.

Bunch added that the proposal includes the purchase of equipment to make it easier to determine who is abusing the three-hour parking limit downtown. This new hand-held equipment would allow workers or volunteers to scan license plates and time-stamp them, making it easier to determine who is using the premium spots more than the alloted time. In addition, the proposal would see the hiring of a part-time parking enforcement officer to help out the one full-time officer.

There was some confusion amongst members of the Parking Committee on the fines and the free pass. Bunch said drivers would get one free pass per day, while other members said it was just once per year. Members of the Parking Committee agreed that they needed to meet once more to clarify the fine issue before presenting it to the Redevelopment Commission.

Mayor Kristen Brown said she wanted the issue to be brought up before the public to get additional feedback before the Redevelopment Commission decides whether or not to approve the measure. If approved, it will go before the Columbus City Council for final approval.
