Woman dies in Jennings County accident

A North Vernon woman is dead after an accident yesterday on State Road 7 sent her SUV into a pond.

Jennings County Sheriff's Department says that 54-year-old Deborah J. Shelton of North Vernon was slowing for a vehicle that was making a left turn at about 12:55 p.m. when she was struck from behind by an SUV driven by 25-year-old April M. Sidwell of Columbus.

Shelton's vehicle left the road and traveled across a field before driving into the pond and sinking. Indiana State Police troopers found the vehicle completely submerged with Shelton still inside. They cut her seatbelt and pulled Shelton from the vehicle but she had been underwater for several minutes.

Three other passengers in Shelton's car, including an adult and two small children, were able to escape. Sidwell had four children in her vehicle. Maj. Jerry Shepherd with the sheriff's department said that several people were injured in the crash including some of the children.

State Road 7 was closed for about two hours.
