Mill Race Center asks County Council for support

The leaders of Mill Race Center asked the Bartholomew County Council last night for help funding the senior center.

Mill Race Center had asked for more funding from the city of Columbus this year, but funding levels were kept the same as last year as part of a new grant application process.

Leah Bowes said the Mill Race Center tries to help individuals meet certain fitness goals with dedicated fitness guides in the "Aging Well" program. In this program, members are paired with a dedicated fitness guide that helps individual members identify specific fitness goals, then map out a path to reach them. Bowes says the fitness guides will then help members to identify any potential obstacles, and provide encouragement, to reach said goals.

Bowes says the plan is relatively new, but early indicators are that members are excited about the "Aging Well" program. She said that programs such as these, and the help they provide to older Columbus residents are just a few of the reasons the Mill Race Center deserves financial support.

Lynn Hyatt, Mill Race Center Vice President, echoed Bowes sentiments. She says that the residents that utilize the center are an important segment of the community. Hyatt added that the Mill Race Center has been, and will continue to be, a good steward of funds that are sent to it. She also touched on the changing demographics of the area, noting the increasing life-expectancy of residents. She says that older residents are a continually growing and financially important segment of Columbus and the surrounding area.

Hyatt added that, in her opinion, it is the responsibility of the entire community to ensure the success of the Mill Race Center.
