Council hopes visitors center can be tapped for funds

The Bartholomew County Parks and Recreation Board plans to ask for an additional maintenance employee this week during the county budget hearings.

But Bartholomew County Council members want the Columbus Area Visitors Center to pay for the worker. .

The extra worker is needed because of the sports tourism events taking place at Dunn Stadium and the Petersville ball fields, said County Councilwoman Evelyn Pence who is the council's liaison to the county board. Those events are bringing money to the community, but they are also costing the county money because of the increased upkeep, maintenance and staff time.

Pence says that she would like the Columbus Area Visitors Center to consider paying for the additional worker.

"There are a lot of requirements to meet the level of the ball teams that are coming in," Pence said. "If the Vistiors Center could help us with financing another employee, giving us money, that would be very helpful because we are bringing in more money."

The visitors center is funded through hotel room taxes. Councilman Jorge Morales suggested that the visitors center should consider funding more employees for both the county and city parks departments.
