Columbus Area Visitors Center celebrates 20 years

Columbus Area Visitors Center celebrated its 20th anniversary Tuesday afternoon with an annual meeting at The Commons.

The organization has several big projects on the horizon, including a new website, kiosks throughout the county and the establishment of a satellite office in Hope, said Lynn Lucas, the center's executive director.

"We are working on some things we are really excited about," Lucas said. "We are working on an agreement for a satellite operation, an office in the county, in the Hope area. That is almost real, almost concrete.

"These interactive kiosks, we have been talking about for two or three years. It is a big project. We will probably fund it over two or three years. But we want to have information for those visitors, wherever they are."

The new website will launch soon and will incorporate modern features such as smartphone accessible pages and larger fonts designed for web use.

Lucas said there will also be several large staff changes in the next few months, including her own retirement. Lucas said she will step down but there will be a transition period.

"I am going to be around, you are not going to get rid of Lynn Lucas yet!" she joked. "It looks as though I will probably be around after the first of the year as a consultant, and probably be around through the first quarter of next year."

During the annual meeting, Jim Henderson was honored with the visitors center's "unforgettable partner" award for his work on the Hamilton Center Ice Arena fundraising and other projects throughout the years.

Other organizations recognized for their contributions to local tourism included:

  • The Columbus Area Arts Council
  • Bartholomew County Public Library
  • Ivy Tech Franklin-Columbus School of Fine Arts and Design
  • IU Center for Art and Design.
  • Bartholomew County Historical Society.
